Dr. Angela RobertsDr. Angela Roberts is a Canada Research Chair in Data Analytics and Digital Health in Cognitive Aging and Dementia at Western University. Her research is concentrated on enhancing the cognitive health span and outcomes for individuals who are aging and those with neurodegenerative conditions. A rehabilitation scientist by training, she leverages her expertise at the intersection of health sciences, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, and machine learning. Dr. Roberts' work explores the entire spectrum of cognitive aging, from neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and dementia to exceptional cognitive aging, a phenomenon she studies in SuperAgers. Her research team analyzes naturalistic behaviours—including connected speech and movement—to identify subtle markers that reveal how the brain changes over time. This approach is central to her aim of understanding what factors can enhance a person's cognitive resilience. Dr. Roberts' work is highly collaborative and guided by the "nothing about us without us" philosophy, ensuring that patients and their families are partners in the research process. She is the Canadian Lead for the SuperAging Research Initiative and Principal Investigator for the Communication Bridge randomized control trial, which focuses on communication-based interventions for primary progressive aphasia and Alzheimer’s dementia. Dr. Roberts' research has received funding from prominent organizations, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Parkinson’s Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. She also serves on the research board for Parkinson Canada. She has served on the executive committees for large multi-centre research initiatives and is the founding Co-director of Western’s Collaborative Specialization in Machine Learning in Health and Biomedical Sciences. |
